anti-language project with Heritage School

Monday, September 03, 2012

Hi Terrell

Thank you for your mail. I have forwarded your mail to my school co-ordinator, Ira Bhattacharya, who will let you know exactly how we can go about the project you have chosen.

Since you are interested in project  - CREATING THE TEXT , why don't you also try the project  -  DESKTOP DIARIES  which also deals with a language we see emerging and taking shape, all over the world. What do you think? Although Facebook and Twitter are restricted in China perhaps text messaging on mobile phones is allowed.

For your art teacher, I think project 5 - FROM FIBRES TO FASHION and project 6  - WHAT MY HANDS CAN DO  will be perfect as China is  historically and traditionally superlative in textiles and handicrafts and is making great strides in world fashions these days.

What about project 2 - FUN FOODS OF INDIA AND THE PARTNER COUNTRY?  Chinese cuisine is very popular in India. My family is especially fond of Chinese food and I cook Chinese recipes at least once every week. Do think over this one.

I am looking forward to starting the project soon. Our students are having their exams which will be over in 2/3 days. Then they will be able to correspond with you.

Warm regards

Hi Anita

Sounds great. And I would be interested in the othe project - #12 - creating the text. I have a middle school publications class that would be good for this and we are able to Skype.

Most of the students have VPNs at home and use Facebook and Google+ at home; the Chinese students don't as they can get into a lot of strife for it but it seems others are left alone.

Our music teacher (my wife, Australian) in K - 5 (# 8) is interested in the music topic. She has been teaching music for more than 30 years in Australia, New York and here. I am forwarding her your earlier email with the projects. She will write to you later in the week.

And our art teacher wants to do a project with her fifth grade with India.

A school I have taught at (and my wife started 30 years ago) in Adelaide, South Australia, is also interested in doing a project between three countries. I was speaking with the head of curriculum last month when we were there about this and she would like to try this where we could have a three way conversation using Google + and etc. I have done this in New York between three schools - my wife led a music project between schools (we were at different schools) and she had them all singing at once. I also had my 8th grade class do a hip hop workshop for her classes which was quite successful.

South Australia is right between our time zones - about one and a half earlier than us and you are an hour earlier than they are.

Lots of possibilities.
